Chapter 14: Elara Shaoqing

“Are you trying to cause mass hysteria in Vegas?” Baozhai yells, grips the steering wheel so hard that the knuckles of his Human hands turn shades of blue. His red corvette zooms down a gravel laden backroad that shakes the car like a mini earthquake. “What the hell were you thinking, Elara?”

“That you only live once.” I shrug as I secure my seatbelt. The backseat of this contraption offers little to no legroom, so I pick up my feet and plop them atop Ricardo’s lap. Ricardo’s face burns red like a tomato as he strokes my legs. “Kinda cramped back here.”

“I’m sorry,” Omega says softly, attempts and fails to adjust the passenger seat forward. “I don’t know how to work this—”

“You haven’t changed much.” Baozhai merges onto a near-empty highway where trucks zip by at the speed of light. “You’re still that little Ryn who never followed the rules. You never obeyed authority.”

“And that’s why I love her,” Ricardo chirps, cracks a cocky smile. I still don’t know what the hell it is about Ricardo that makes me love him so damn much. Seriously, he’s not the type of male I’d go for due to his Humanness, but here I am, falling deeper in love with Ricky.

“I wasn’t talking to you, Human.” The vitriol in his voice pulls me back to a time where my big brother would pick fights with Humans for fun. He got his ass handed to him quite a lot, and I was too young and too fragile to jump in and help. Seeing him surrounded by Humans as part of his everyday routine, though, I would think he’d be less hostile toward Ricardo. His tone alone makes my skin prick with goosebumps.

Kicking the back of Baozhai’s seat, I hiss at him, “Don’t you talk to Ricardo like that. He’s done nothing wrong.” I rustle a hand in Ricardo’s hair as if he’s my pet. “Besides, your anger is misplaced. You should be happy to see me. I traveled all this way because I wanted closure. I needed closure.”

“You should’ve stayed where you were.” He glares at me through the rearview mirror with his unnerving Human eyes, grumbles something inaudible before saying aloud, “You’re still a damn brat.”

“You’re an ungrateful bastard.” Balling my fist, I take a breath to calm my roiling anger building inside of me like a volcano. Attacking my brother would kill us all in this hideous car. I’ll wait until we pull over, and then I’ll kick his ass. Smacking him in the face wasn’t enough, I see. He needs a thorough beatdown that consists of a broken nose, fractured jaw, a few cracked ribs, and a wet willie.

Ricardo clears his throat. “Before this sibling squabble turns into a war, I’d like to thank you, Baozhai. Though you may regard me with disdain, I’m grateful that you are willing to take me, my love, and my trusty medic to Hollywoodland. You may think ill of us at this time, but I assure you that we will be on our best behavior.
